The purpose of the Smurthwaitesong website is to offer free of charge our music, simplifications (in both English and Spanish), and training presentations (in Spanish) in order to enhance the worship of Jesus Christ in the Church and in the home.

My name is Michael Smurthwaite and I grew up in Salt Lake City. As a child I loved to try to discern my mother's alto voice as she sang in the Tabernacle Choir. During the last 30 years, my wife Heather and I have enjoyed composing religious music for home and church use in order to more fully focus our celebrations on the Lord.

We recently returned from serving a CES/music mission in Central America where we were part of the Central America Area Music Committee with the charge to train members with music callings. Responding to observed needs, we provided (see Spanish section) the following:

1) Training presentations for stake and ward music committees based on the Church music handbook, and instructions on how to organize a piano class in each stake.

2) A simplified piano/conducting lesson manual with lesson plans, which was developed and distributed to each stake to teach basic music and conducting concepts.

3) Simplified hymns and Primary songs in the same key as the original in order to assist emergent piano players to learn to first play and accompany, and later transition into playing from the regular hymnbook and Primary songbook.

4) Hymn arrangements created for the use of stake or ward choirs. (When viewing the arrangements or the original songs, we've learned by experience that it's best to listen or play through them a few times before determining how best to utilize them.)

We hope these offerings will help increase the music abilities and appreciation of many Latter-day Saints. Since music increases the influence of the Lord in all worship, we also hope these songs will help transfer faith to the rising generation-- which includes our children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
